Domain Names Registration

Everyone who has a website had to go through domain names registration, ideally cheap domain  registration, nonetheless they had to go through the process of domain registration.

The term "domain name" is the same as your website address or URL. For example, the domain name for Hot Topic is: www.hottopic.com

Every web site on the internet has a numeric address, which is called an IP-Address. For example, if you type 209.131.36.158 in your browser, you would be taken to yahoo.com but because this series of numbers is more difficult to remember, worded names have been used in their place, such as nike.com, etc.

Choosing a domain name can be trickier than finding a cheap domain registration company.

Here are some helpful tips for choosing a successful domain name:

  • If your business name is long, you may want to choose a domain name that is shorter and easier to remember.
  • Make sure to choose a domain name that is easily spelled; you want as many people as possible to be able to remember your web address.
  • Remember: Domain names cannot have spaces or special characters (%, _, *, $, #, @, !, …). However, you can use numbers and dashes.

Before registering a domain name, make sure to choose an email address that you will always have access to. After your initial domain name registration, some companies you register your domain name with will send you renewal notification via email and it will be up to you to remember to pay it, other companies will keep your payment information stored and will automatically renew your domain name for you. If your email is incorrect or has been changed, it can be very time consuming and costly to renew your domain name. This is because some Domain Registration companies do not disclose their phone number and will only do the domain renewal via email.

Most people have more than one email address. When choosing which email to give to your domain name registration company, choose the one that will not change, such as a personal email.

Below are some facts and tips to keep in mind before you renew your domain name:

  • If you are going to change the email address you originally provided to the domain name registration company, you should update your email information as soon as possible or at least 2 months before your domain name expires.    The same goes for automatic payment information.
  • Most companies send you domain name notifications as early as 3 months (90 days) in advance. Do not postpone this. It is not worth the trouble of getting back your domain name once it expires. Re-register your domain after you receive the first notice.
  • Also, consider registering your domain name for 2, 3 or 5 years if the domain registrar company offers you valuable discount.
  • If your domain name expires (meaning your website is not longer available online), you will have 30 days to reclaim your domain name before it becomes available for anyone to register. This 30 day period is called the "Redemption period". During the redemption period you will have the first right to reregister your domain name. However, depending on the domain registrar company, they may charge you as much as 1,500% times more for the same domain name and you will have to search for cheap domain names registration elsewhere. Again this depends on the company.
